ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Simunul LGU and MSU Tawi-Tawi sign MOA, turns over micro-ice plant

Simunul, Tawi-Tawi (February 19) ---- The MSU-TCTO and the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation led the turnover ceremony of the micro-ice plant facility to a fishing community in Simunul, Tawi-Tawi. The ice plant was a commitment of the late philanthropist and Environment Secretary Gina Lopez to the fisherfolk of Simunul as part of the Quest for Love project of MSU-TCTO and Lopez's iLove Foundation.

The ice plant would directly benefit the 250 tuna fisherfolk in Brgy. Tonggusung and Brgy. Maruwa in Simunul. Fisherfolk catch yellowfin tuna at the Celebes sea which is more than 10 km away from Simunul. Normally, they have to travel first to Bongao to purchase ice before proceeding to the fishing area. This facility would save them travel costs and time going to and from Bongao. In addition, the fisherfolk in the said barangays can avail of the ice at a relatively cheaper price.

Mr. Rodmark R. Barriga, proprietor of Palamigan Company who developed the micro-ice plant, personally delivered the equipment. He also provided short training on the operation and maintenance of the equipment as well as basic business planning.

The turnover ceremony was followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the Local Government of Simunul, represented by Mayor Wasilah Abdurahman, ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, represented by Program Director Jen Santos, and MSU TCTO with Chancellor Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali as representative. The parties committed to continue the Quest for Love project of the late Ms. Gina Lopez in Simunul.

The communities of Tonggusung, Maruwa and Mungkay are partner communities of MSU TCTO. The fisherfolk are also members of the Bantay Dagat, a group which have been guarding the Marine Protected Area (MPA) for over 10 years. Last year, Tonggusung-Maruwa Fish Sanctuary MPA, was among the Top 10 Finalists for best managed MPAs in the country.

The Quest for Love Project of Ms. Gina Lopez in Tawi-Tawi will be continued by the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation – Bantay Kalikasan in partnership with MSU TCTO.

In a Facebook post, the Chancellor expressed her gratitude to the late Ms. Gina Lopez for her love and support for Tawi-Tawi.

"We miss you, Ms. Gina Lopez! Life is short, kaya dapat laging handang ibigay ang 100% commitment sa mga bagay at gawain na nakakapagbigay ng saya sa kapwa tao upang maging makabuluhan ang ating buhay," the Chancellor remarked in said post.
