OCEANeS, UPMin hosts training-workshop

The University of the Philippines Mindanao, in collaboration with MSU-TCTO's Office of Continuing Education and Extension Services (OCEANeS), conducted a Training-Workshop on Laboratory Techniques and Data Analysis for Fish Biology from February 26 to March 3, 2020 at the OCEANeS Conference Room.

The participants on said training-workshop were able to participate in hands-on activities and lectures on Orientation and Datasheet Preparation, Fish Morphometrics and Photography, Tissue Extraction, Otolith and Gonad Extraction, Introduction to Data Analyses used in Otolith Studies, Length Frequency Data Analysis using FiSAT, Age-Length Data Analysis using PAST and Introduction to Gonadal Analysis and Gonadosomatic Index. Dr. Cleto Nañola Jr. and his CRRES team from UP Mindanao facilitated the said workshop with the assistance of Mr. Kevin L. Labrador, Ms. Maybelle A. Fortaleza, Ms. Melanie C. Jandoc, Mr. Joemarie J. Rodriquez, Ms. Christine Joy J. Salazar, Ms. Jodi F. del Fierro and Ms. Junissa M. Consuegra.

The training was participated by select faculty, staff and students from the Institute of Oceanography and Environmental Science, College of Fisheries, College of Arts and Sciences, Office of Research and OCEANeS. MSU Sulu's Dean for Fisheries Dr. Ronaldo Ancheta and Research Director Dr. Maribelle Hanani also attended the training-workshop. Other participants from MSU Sulu were Prof. Satra J. Sailadjan, Ms. Enraida Imbuk and Maher Maddan.

Dr. Cleto Nañola Jr., Project Leader, together with the CRRES (Coral Reefs Resiliency and Ecology Studies) and OCEANeS teams were also able to visit Batu-Batu for sampling on a DNA barcoding project.

The workshop was funded by UP Mindanao and MSU TCTO. It is part of a DOST-PCAARRD funded project collaboration between the two institutions on "DNA Barcoding of Selected Marine Fishes in Davao and Sulu Archipelago" and also a continuing education/extension services activity of OCEANeS.
