TCTO Co-Hosted the Sama Summit

Mindanao State University- Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography co-hosted the Sama Summit organized by the Tumpukan Bangsa Sama, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). With the theme, “Sama Empowerment Through Peace and Development: A Raodmap to Federalism,” the Summit helped push the cognizance and involvement of the Sama in the province in peace process and development.

The event was held at the Marine Science Museum, College of Fisheries of the Mindanao State University -Tawi-Tawi on May 25-26, 2017.

The welcome address was given by TCTO Sama Studies Center Director, Prof. Abduljim Hassan representing Chancellor Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali, as the latter has attended the Technical Budget Hearing for TCTO in Manila.

Department of Health-ARMM Assistant Secretary Dayang Carlsum Sangkula Jumaide gave an inspirational message to the Sama who attended the summit. She emphasized that Sama people need to be united and should have representative in the peace process initiated by the government. She represented Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman because Hataman has to attend to conflict caused by the rebels in Marawi City.

The Speakers of the two-day summit are Dr. Mucha Shim Quiling, the vice chairman and CEO of Sulu Current Research Institute. She discussed the Sama Historical Enigma, a reflection on Sama culture and history. Afterwards, the topic Bangsa Sama and Federalism was discussed by Dr. Hamid Ladjakahal, Assistant Secretary of DILG for Muslim Mindanao. In the afternoon of the first day, BTC Commissioner,  Atty. Joe Lorena talked on the Bangsamoro Basic Law.

The two-day summit ended with a workshop and presentation of position papers.
